Profile

Race Car Trophy Snipe National 2008 Kathleen was born in Buffalo and at the age of ten, started sailing at Buffalo Canoe Club, a yacht club on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie. In addition to sailing, Kathleen competed in figure skating, downhill skiing, and soccer. She attended university at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, where she studied Chinese/Asian Studies and Russian Studies. She sailed on the college’s nationally ranked sailing team and competed on the ski and women’s ice hockey teams.

Following university, Kathleen competed in three Radial World Championships, placing 16th in her last Radial Worlds. In 2002, Kathleen moved to Newport Rhode Island where she could sail year-round. In 2004, she made the US Sailing team in the women’s Olympic Europe Dinghy class. Since then, Kathleen has competed in many sailboat classes including the Laser Standard, Laser Radial, 29erXX, 49er FX, 470, Lightning, RSX (Olympic windsurfer), and Snipe classes.

Kathleen is a two-time Pan American Games medalist, six-time Snipe Class National Champion, two-time North American Champion, and been on the podium at numerous other international events as both a skipper and crew.

In May of 2010, Kathleen returned to the US after working as a coach in Venice, Italy. Again, her sights were set on Olympic class racing. Because of her size, fitness, and tactical knowledge, she was encouraged by the US Sailing Team coach to take up windsurfing and compete in the Olympic windsurfing class – the RSX. After only two and half years, Kathleen was once again, named to the US National Team, this time in the discipline of Olympic windsurfing.

In late January 2014, the opportunity presented itself for Kathleen to try the new women’s Olympic Class, the 49er FX. She teamed up with former women’s match racing star, Genny Tulloch, and after only 7 days in the boat, earned a place on the US Team.

Kathleen is based out of Miami and Newport and lists Lago di Garda, Marsala, La Rochelle, and her home waters of Abino Bay as her favorite places to sail.  When she is not away training or competing, she works in media/marketing, coaches youth sailors and enjoys reading, yoga, running, and back-country skiing.
